Intellectual Property & Technology Litigation Associate - Squire Patton Boggs (Cleveland, OH)

Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP, a global law firm, is currently seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and highly motivated Intellectual Property & Technology Litigation Associate to be based in Cleveland, Ohio; Northern California; or Washington DC.  Candidates with a minimum of two years of experience and an Undergraduate STEM degree or equivalent STEM background will be considered.

Legal research, drafting appellate briefs and motions, discovery, court appearances, case management, and client communications on IP Litigation matters.  The advocacy process from pre-filing considerations through trial/hearing and appeal.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • JD and admitted to at least one state’s bar
  • Undergraduate STEM degree or equivalent STEM background
  • At least two (2) years of patent litigation experience

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Strong legal writing skills required
  • Excellent communications (written and oral) and judgment are essential.
  • Strong analytical skills, especially ability to analyze patents (e.g. assessments of infringement and invalidity, and claim interpretation)
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others on complex matters.

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property & Technology works closely with executive and technical leadership and other business  functions at Goodyear to define and implement an IP & technology strategy, protect intellectual property rights, and provide legal advice to management and staff on all aspects  of global intellectual property, including inventions, patents, emerging technologies, copyrights and trademarks, and licensing. 

This position directs and supervises the delivery of the Intellectual Property department's services to meet client needs and objectives, and ensures responsive, timely, ethical client support.  This position will partner with internal departments (e.g., Technology,  Engineering, Sales & Marketing) and Goodyear's New Mobility and Goodyear Venture Capital Fund divisions to support innovative product development, technical collaborations, and technology-based venture capital initiatives.  
The responsibilities of the Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property & Technology will include, but not be limited to the following:  
  • Client partnering/strategic design - Collaborate with technology, engineering, product, and strategy teams to shape IP & technology strategy and collaborate across business units to identify and seize high value innovation. 
  • Analyze and mitigate risks in view of business goals and objectives, third party IP and trends, legal updates, and/or other environmental factors, and apply sound tactical approaches to solutions to maintain our investments' values and move the business forward. 
  • Actively evaluate and manage patent, technology, trademark and licensing  work to ensure quality and timely work and maximizing value of property. 
  • Supervise patent associated activities including assessment and evaluation of invention disclosures, preparation and prosecution of US and foreign patent applications, management of global patent portfolio and conflicts with third parties. 
  • Supervise patent and trademark clearance activity for new products and services and the Company's global trademark portfolio, domain name portfolio and Goodyear Licensed Product business, including potentially evaluating acquisition and licensing opportunities. 
  • Actively evaluate and direct delivery of agreement services against the objectives of the relevant business plan and work streams of the RDE&Q organization, Information Technology organization, Procurement and Business Development 
  • Serve as advisor and provide guidance and education to researchers, engineers and business teams on IP & technology issues and provide counsel on IP & technology terms in commercial and corporate matters.
